OUR RATING: 8/10
The Nikon 7-15 x 35 Action Zoom binocular are mid-sized, or “standard sized”. With its 7-15 power range, multi-coated, precision ground lenses, and Bak-4 high index prisms, it offers an outstanding viewing experience, at a price that won’t break the bank. Bak-4 high index prism optics make for sharp detailed images with little or no distortion. The sharp multi-coated optics give that extra edge on the contrast, and really bring out the colors of your subject. At 7x, a 5mm exit pupil provides maximum light for sporting events which take place at night. 15x is easily enough (some say excessive), for getting extremely close to the action. You can go from 7 to 15x instantly, and the central focus is also quick, and super smooth to operate.
If you suffer from eye strain, during long viewing sessions, you will be pleased to know that the “Diopter adjustment” can help reduce your discomfort.
Of course, without image stabilization, most people get shaking images at the higher magnification. A decent tripod soon solves this, and this binocular has a slot where you can easily screw in your tripod.
These binoculars are designed for outdoorsmen, sports fans, birders and the like, who will no doubt appreciate the styling and ergonomics. If you are the sort who has a habit of dropping expensive gadgets, the tough rubber armour will come to your rescue on such occasions. They can take a decent knock, so customers have said. Further protection is included in the shape of rubber caps for the eyepieces, and a sturdy case for carrying and storage.
There are only a few negative points that have been made by owners of these. Some complain that it is “bulkier” or “heavier” than fixed-power binoculars. They are not water or fog proof. And if you want to be really picky, the lens cover is not attatched to the body. We think these are minor points in light of the $110 price tag. So we still give these binoculars 4/5 for overall value and performance.
